Haemokion

Haemokion

Composition: =    Each 1ml ampoule contains Phytomenadione 10mg.
=    Each chewable tablet contains Phytomenadione 10mg.

Properties: Haemokion® (Phytomenadione) is a fat- soluble synthetic analogue of Vitamin K1 having the same type and degree of activity as the naturally occurring Vitamin K1.

Haemokion® is necessary for the synthesis of blood coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X in the liver.

Indications: In the prevention and treatment of haemorrhage due to hypoprothrombinemia (i.e. deficiency of clotting factors II, VII, IX and X) caused by:
-    Over-dosage of coumarin – type anti-coagulants.
-    Factors limiting absorption or synthesis of Vitamin K1 e.g.:
•    Obstructive jaundice
•    Liver and intestinal disorders
•    After prolonged treatment with antibiotics , sulphonamides or salicylates
-    Prophylaxis and therapy of haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
-    Patients receiving prolonged hyper-alimentation or total parenteral nutrition.

Contra-Indictions: Hypersensitivity to Phytomenadione.

Adverse Effects:-    Intravenous doses of Phytomenadione may, in rare cases, cause severe reactions resembling hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis. If an anaphylactic reaction occurs, I.V. epinephrine should be injected without delay followed by I.V. administration of gluco-corticoids.
-    Very rarely, pain, swelling and phlebitis may occur at the injection site when Phytomenadione is given.
-    Oral anti-coagulant - induced hypoprothrombinemia: An immediate coagulant effect should not be expected after administration of Phytomenadione.  It takes a minimum of 1 to 2 hours for a measurable improvement in the prothrombin time.
-    Fresh plasma or blood transfusions may be required for severe blood loss or lack of response to Vitamin K1.
-    Phytomenadione will not counteract the anti-coagulant action of heparin.

Dosage & Administration: -    Hemorrhagic disease of the newborn:
•    Prophylaxis: A single dose of 0.5 to 1mg may be given I.M. to the newborn infant or 2mg orally followed by a second dose of 2mg after 4 to 7 days.
•    Treatment: 1mg I.V., S.C.  or I.M.; further dose may be given if necessary
-    Anti-coagulant – induced prothrombin deficiency:
•    2.5 to 10mg up to 25mg initially with a maximum dose of 50mg  orally or parenterally.
-    Hypoprothrombinemia due to other causes (antibiotics, salicylates or other drugs - factors limiting absorption or synthesis):
•    2.5 to 10mg up to 25mg initially with a maximum dose of 50mg orally or parenterally.
-    Prevention of hypoprothrombinemia in patients receiving prolonged hyper-alimentation or total parenteral nutrition:
•    Adults: 5-10mg I.M. once weekly.
•    Children: 2-5mg once weekly.
